En estos pasados días tuve el placer de “janguear” y entrevistar a los chicos de Color Conspiracy Tattoo Gallery y a su propietario, el conocido Juan Salgado. Es posible que si te interesa el mundo de el arte y el tatuaje ya conozcas sobre el o al menos hayas escuchado su nombre en algún momento, con mas de una década de experiencia, aprendizaje y conocimiento ha podido establecerse como artista y ganar el reconocimiento en su campo. Abrieron su Nuevo “shop” en Santurce, tan reciente como el pasado fin de semana y esta ESPECTACULAR. Esta lleno de piezas de arte de ellos mismos y varios murales que ellos también pintaron. Tan pronto como entras puedes sentir esta vibra súper “cool”, tienen buena música, te hacen sentir cómodo y pienso que eso es algo sumamente importante cuando se refiere a un tatuaje, tienes que sentirte relajado y comprendido. En el “shop” se encuentran trabajando un grupo de artistas sumamente talentosos que al igual que Juan se están dando a conocer poco a poco por su gran talento, aquí hay un poco de lo que reuní hablando con cada uno de ellos, una leve información para que conozcas de su travesía y su impactante trabajo.
These past days I had the pleasure to hang out and interview the guys from Color Conspiracy Tattoo Gallery and its owner, the well-known Juan Salgado. It’s possible that if you’re interest in art and tattoo’s you already know who he is or at least you’ve heard about him at some point, with more than a decade of experience, learning and knowledge he’s been able to establish himself as an artist and get the recognition he deserves on his field of work. They opened their new shop at Santurce, as recently as this past weekend and it is AMAZING. It is filled with art pieces from themselves and several murals they also made. As soon as you come in you can feel this awesome vive, they have great music, they make you feel comfortable and I think that right there is something really important when it comes to getting a tattoo, you have to feel relaxed and understood. At the shop there are several artists working at the moment, all very talented and starting to make headlines the same way that Juan did at the beginning of his career, so here’s a little of what I gathered by talking to each of them, some slight info for you to learn about their journey and their astonishing work.
Krystel Ivannie IG: @krystel_ivannie
Obtuvo su Bachillerato en Pinturas y Artes Gráficas en la Universidad Interamericana de San German, luego de terminar sus estudios comienza a buscar un trabajo relacionado con su pasión, que es el arte y después de recorrer un camino no muy fácil comienza a tatuar, se le hizo difícil entrar al campo y se encontraba un poco cohibida por el machismo que rodea la vocación. Tuvo su primera oportunidad en Mayagüez, la cual fue un poco cuesta arriba, ya que los hombres no querían que una mujer los tatuara sin considerar lo talentosa que era. Al encontrarse con esta piedra en su camino decide renunciar a su sueño, comienza a trabajar en una tienda y es ahí donde realmente se da con el hecho que su vocación es tatuar y expresar su arte, así que decide dejar ese trabajo e ir a aventurar. Llega a un lugar por recomendación de un amigo y es ahí donde comienza a desarrollar su nombre mayormente con las mujeres y la comunidad gay. Siguiendo el consejo de su padre, el cual le dijo que si quería ser buena en lo que hacia debía buscar a el mejor, decide darse la tarea de conocer a Juan Salgado. Llega a donde el con el miedo de que resulte arrogante, que no le permita un momento de su tiempo; se sorprende al ver la humildad y disposición de Juan. Una de las cosas que mas la sorprendió fue cuando ella le pregunta “¿Qué mujer en el campo esta al mismo nivel que el?” y el le responde que la acababa de conocer, refiriéndose a ella. Se siente muy agradecida con el, ya que se ha convertido en su mentor, le enseña técnicas, estilos y la ayuda a crecer. Hace dos años que se encuentra trabajando en Color Conspiracy, lugar que describe como “el sueño de todo artista”; considera que posee ese toque femenino que la hace resaltar a ella y a sus piezas. Quiere servir de inspiración para otras chicas que quieren ser artistas y culmino diciendo, “Yo la pase mal, me dijeron que no lo podía hacer y saben que, aquí estoy”.
She obtained her Bachelors Degree on Paintings and Graphic Design at Interamerican University of San German, after getting her degree she starts to look for a job that’s related to her passion, which is art and after traveling a not so easy path she starts tattooing, it was really hard for her to get into the field and she found herself a little apprehended because of sexism towards women around that career. She found her first opportunity at Mayagüez, which was a little hard because men didn’t wanted to get a tattoo from a woman even though she was really talented. After bumping into this huge rock she decided to just let go of her dream, started working as a cashier at a store and it is there when she realizes her calling is to express herself through art, so she decides to leave that job and go after what she wants. She gets a job opportunity by a friends recommendation and it’s there where she starts to get known mostly by women and the gay community. Following her father’s advice, who said if she wanted to be good at what she did she had to find the best at it, she decides to go and meet Juan Salgado. When she gets there, she’s a little scared that he might be arrogant, that he will not agree to talk to her; it becomes a surprise to see how humble and willing he is. One of the things that surprised her the most was when she asked him “¿Which woman could he name that is at the same level he is on his field?” and he answered he had just met her, referring to her. She can’t be more grateful to him, he has become her mentor, teacher her techniques, styles and helps her grow. It’s been two years since she started working at Color Conspiracy, place she describes as “the dream of every artist”; she considers she has that feminine touch that makes her and her designs stand out. She wants to serve as an inspiration to other girls who want to be artist and finishes saying, “I had very rough times, people told me I couldn’t do it and you know what, here I am”.

Desde pequeño le apasiono el arte y se expresaba por medio de el dibujo, obtiene su Bachillerato en Imagen y Diseño en la Escuela de Artes Plásticas de San Juan. Luego de graduarse comienza a buscar trabajo en su campo de estudios y como todo diseñador, donde tiene la oportunidad de trabajar es en una imprenta, no es el mejor lugar para expresarse, pero al menos comienza a hacer varios trabajos y desenvolverse. Buscando ejercer lo que le apasiona comienza a investigar sobre artistas, logra comunicarse con Luis o “Verdugo” (como se conoce en la calle) y este se vuelve de gran ayuda para el. Poco a poco fue desarrollándose con oportunidades que llegaran en el camino y no fue hasta un día que escucho sobre una oportunidad de trabajo en Color Conspiracy y decidió aplicar. Actualmente se encuentra trabajando en la galería, desde hace dos meces aproximadamente. Describe el lugar como uno de mucha inspiración, buena vibra y libertad de expresión. Comenta que lo mas difícil que le resulta es cuando el cliente no esta abierto a sugerencias y no hay manera de hacerlo cambiar de opinión, aparte de eso puede controlar cualquier situación a la perfección.
Since he was a child he felt inclined towards art, he found it easy to express himself through drawings and paintings. He obtains his Bachelor’s Degree from the School of Plastic Arts in San Juan on Design and Image. After graduating he starts hunting for a job on his field of study and like every other designer, the place he has the opportunity to work is a printing-house, it’s not the best place to express yourself, but at least you start to work on several tasks and evolve. Looking to apply his passion he starts to look up artists, he manages to contact Luis or “Verdugo” (as he is known on the streets) and he becomes of great help to him. Little by little he starts to grow with opportunities that came on the way and it was until one day that he heard about an opportunity to work at Color Conspiracy and decided to apply for it. Currently he’s working at the gallery, since approximately two months ago. He describes the place like one filled with inspiration, good vibes and freedom of expression. He mentions that the hardest thing he might encounter on his job is when a client isn’t open to suggestions and there’s no way of making him change his opinion, apart from that he can control almost every situation to perfection.

Desde pequeño fue un amante de el arte y desde que recuerda le encantaba dibujar. Conoce a Juan Salgado desde la escuela superior y no es hasta la universidad que comienza a relacionarse con el. Luego de graduarse comienza a trabajar en Rebel Ink, un día Juan se comunica con el dejándole saber que abrirá un “shop” en Guaynabo y le gustaría que el formara parte de su equipo. Al preguntarle como fue la transición de el dibujo a el arte de tatuar, describe que es algo bien diferente y para nada como piensa la gente que es, que hay que reprogramar la manera de dibujar, para nada se compara el papel a la piel. Detalla la experiencia de trabajar en Color Conspiracy como una muy placentera.
Since he was a little boy he loved art and he liked drawing since he can remember. He knows Juan Salgado from high school, but it wasn’t until college that he became to get acquainted. After graduating he starts to work at Rebel Ink, one day he gets a call from Juan letting him know he will open a shop in Guaynabo and he would like for him to be a part of his team. When asked how was the transition from drawing to the art of tattooing, he explains it’s something very different and not at all how people might think it is, that you have to reprogram the way you draw, paper doesn’t compare at all to skin. He describes the experience of working at Color Conspiracy as a very pleasant one.

Le atrae el dibujo desde que tiene recuerdo y pinta desde los 14 años. Vivió en Perú hasta que se graduó de la escuela superior y luego viajo hasta a Chicago donde se encontraba su padre. Ahí comenzó a estudiar y lo hizo por un periodo de semestre y medio. Comenzó a tatuar a sus 20 años, como parte de un juego. Fue a un “tattoo shop” y casualmente, el dueño que también era peruano al enterarse que dibujaba le pregunto si le gustaría tatuar, la idea le pareció interesante y dejo de estudiar para dedicarse a eso de lleno. Empezó a buscar información sobre artistas destacados en el campo y fue así como supo de Juan Salgado. Un día envía su portafolio a Color Conspiracy por email y al recibir la invitación para ser parte de el equipo decide mudarse a Puerto Rico. Figura la experiencia de trabajo como una increíble, se siente cómodo, productivo, sin presión y sin estrés.
He became attracted to drawing since he can remember and he paints since he was 14 years old. He lived in Perú until he graduated from high school and then he moved to Chicago where his father resided. There he started to study and he continued for a period of one semester and a half. He began tattooing when he was 20 years old as a part of a game. He went to a tattoo parlor and casually, it’s owner was also from Perú and after noticing he drew, he asked him if he would like to work as a tattoo artist, the idea became appealing to him so he left his studies and started to fully dedicate his time to it. He looked up some of the artist that were making headlines in the field and he stumbled upon Juan Salgado. One day he sent his portfolio to Color Conspiracy via email and after receiving an invitation to be part of the team; he decided to move to Puerto Rico. Defines the work experience as an incredible one, he feels comfortable, productive, without pressure nor stress.
